From Those Who Have Been Through the Process

SM

Somchai Meechai

"I brought in an old Seiko my father had left me — it had not run properly in some years. The team here looked at it carefully, told me exactly what was wrong, and quoted a sensible amount before starting. When I collected it three weeks later, the rate was documented and the improvement was obvious. Straightforward from start to finish."

"My watch crown had become stiff and the gaskets were overdue in the humidity here. The assessment was free and included a written note about what they found. The repair was done as quoted, and they were honest about what I could and could not expect from the watch in the sea afterward. That kind of straightforwardness is not always easy to find."

"I left a pocket watch that belonged to my grandfather. I was worried it would be dismissed as not worth restoring but that was not what happened at all. They assessed it thoroughly, explained what the movement needed, and gave me the choice. The work took about six weeks but the watch now runs and it looks as it should. I am glad I brought it here."

"I noticed my watch losing several minutes a day toward the end of a long trip. I did not expect to find anyone in Patong who could help properly. The assessment was quick and they were able to service the movement within my remaining time in Phuket. Communication was clear throughout and they knew what they were doing."

"The crown on my everyday automatic had stopped gripping properly. I found this workshop while staying in Phuket and they explained the issue clearly before quoting. The repair was done on time and was explained to me when I collected. The only small note is that I had to wait a couple of extra days for a part, but they messaged me about this in advance, which I appreciated."

"I have been looking for a reliable watchmaker in Phuket since I moved here. Most places either cannot handle older movements or give you prices without examining the watch properly first. Garuda Gearworks does neither. I have now used them for two different pieces and both times the process has been the same: careful, clear, and no surprises."

Case Studies

Three Watches, Three Different Situations

Case Study 01

A Daily Watch Losing Time

The Situation

A client's ten-year-old Swiss automatic had never been serviced and was running around four minutes slow per day. The owner was unsure whether the watch was worth the cost of attention.

What We Did

Full disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, new lubricants throughout, and careful regulation over several days in multiple positions. The balance spring showed early wear but was not yet at replacement stage.

The Outcome

Rate reduced to around +4 seconds per day across positions. The client received a rate sheet and a written note of the balance spring condition for future reference. Completed in 18 days.

"I did not expect such a detailed explanation. The rate sheet was a useful thing to have."

Case Study 02

Crown Failure on a Dive Watch

The Situation

A Phuket resident's 200m dive watch had developed a crown that no longer clicked into the winding position reliably. The watch had been used in the sea regularly and the internal thread showed wear.

What We Did

Crown, stem, and crown tube replaced with correct-specification parts. All case back and crown gaskets renewed. Resistance tested to 10 bar in our pressure tester, confirming the case's rated depth.

The Outcome

Watch returned with test result documented and a clear note about seal replacement intervals in salt water use. The client was advised to have seals checked annually given the intensity of use. Completed in 10 days.

"The test result document was something I had never received from a repair before. Very useful."

Case Study 03

An Inherited Pocket Watch

The Situation

A Thai client brought in a Swiss lever pocket watch from the early twentieth century, received from a relative. The movement had not run in decades and several pivots were visibly worn. The enamel dial was intact but fragile.

What We Did

Full assessment and photograph documentation. Three worn pivots were polished and one replaced. The escapement was serviced and the barrel spring assessed. The dial was cleaned with conservative methods to preserve the enamel. Goals and scope were agreed with the owner before work began.

The Outcome

The movement runs steadily at an acceptable rate for its age. The dial retains its original character. Full restoration record provided. The client chose to keep the case as-found; no case work was carried out at their request. Completed in seven weeks.

"They understood that the history of the piece was as important as the mechanism. I am grateful for the care shown."
